Driving Impact: KR Scholars’ Leadership at the 15th HBCU Philanthropy Symposium

July 8, 2025

This year’s 15th Annual HBCU Philanthropy Symposium was a watershed moment for KR Scholars, as our founders Rufus and Kristen Johnson dove deep into the issues that matter most for student success at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. From critical discussions on improving graduation and retention rates to innovative strategies for reengaging “near-completers” who have stopped out, the symposium provided both data-driven insights and real-world solutions.

Boosting Retention & Completion: Panels explored targeted interventions—such as early-warning analytics, peer-mentoring circles, and wrap-around support services—that have been proven to lift retention and graduation rates across HBCUs. Kristen participated in a breakout on financial-aid counseling and mental-health resources, spotlighting ways to reduce barriers that often derail scholars before they matriculate.
Reengaging Near-Completers: A dedicated session addressed the growing population of students who pause their academic journey. Rufus joined nonprofit and university leaders to share best practices for outreach campaigns, credit-transfer partnerships, and support networks designed to help these scholars return and finish strong.
Career Exploration & Industry Partnerships: The Symposium’s presenting sponsor, Disney, delivered a standout presentation featuring young HBCU alumni thriving in roles across Guest Experience, Video & Content Creation, and more. Hearing firsthand how Disney’s structured internships and mentorship programs bridge classroom learning to professional success was incredibly inspiring—and sparked ideas for similar partnerships within KR Scholars’ workforce-readiness initiatives.
By weaving together these themes—student success metrics, barrier reduction, and real-world career pathways—Rufus and Kristen return energized and ready to translate symposium takeaways into action. Their commitment remains unwavering: to build comprehensive, data-informed programs that empower HBCU scholars not just to enroll, but to graduate and excel in their chosen careers.
