Empowering 60 Students Through Real-Life Financial Simulation at John Marshall High School

April 29, 2026
KR Scholars, in partnership with Truist, brought financial literacy to life for 60 students at John Marshall High School through the Life, Money, and Choices simulation. This hands-on experience allowed students to navigate real-world financial scenarios—from budgeting and credit to everyday expenses—helping them develop stronger decision-making skills and a healthier relationship with money.
Financial literacy isn’t just about understanding numbers—it’s about making informed decisions that shape your future.
This wasn’t a traditional classroom lesson. Students stepped into real-life financial situations that challenged them to think critically about how they earn, spend, save, and plan. Throughout the simulation, they managed monthly budgets, made decisions about housing and transportation, and navigated unexpected financial challenges—experiencing firsthand the impact of their choices.
What stood out most was the level of engagement. Students weren’t just participating—they were asking thoughtful questions, adjusting decisions in real time, and reflecting on what financial responsibility truly looks like. Conversations around credit, savings, and priorities became more tangible and relevant.
This experience reinforces an important truth: when students are given access to hands-on learning opportunities, they gain more than knowledge—they gain confidence.
At KR Scholars, our goal is to ensure students are not only prepared for college, but for life beyond it. Financial literacy is a critical part of that journey. By creating spaces where students can explore real-world scenarios in a supportive environment, we are helping them build a stronger, healthier relationship with money.
We’re grateful to Truist for their partnership and commitment to investing in the next generation. Together, we are equipping students with the tools they need to make informed decisions and build financially secure futures.
