From Scholar to Future Attorney: Deja’s Journey to Law School

August 18, 2025
At KR Scholars, we are proud to celebrate the journeys of our scholars as they pursue excellence beyond graduation. Today, we spotlight Deja—a phenomenal young woman, two-time KR Scholar, and our Alumni Scholar of the Year—who is officially beginning her first day at Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
Deja’s story is one of determination, resilience, and purpose. After being accepted to multiple law schools, she chose Thurgood Marshall to continue her journey toward becoming a future attorney. Along the way, she gave our co-founder, Kristen Johnson, the honor of writing her law school recommendation letter—a testament to the power of connection and support within the KR Scholars community.
To help launch her law school journey, Deja was awarded a $3,000 KR Scholars scholarship. This investment reflects our commitment to empowering HBCU scholars beyond their undergraduate years, ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive in graduate and professional programs.
Her path is also a reminder of the importance of representation. According to the American Bar Association, less than 5% of all lawyers in the U.S. are Black, and an even smaller percentage are Black women. Deja is breaking barriers and paving the way for the next generation of legal professionals.
We are inspired by her commitment and proud to walk alongside her in this next chapter. Congratulations, Deja—we can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make in the legal field and beyond.
