August 4, 2025

Richmond, VA – KR Scholars, a Richmond-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering current and future HBCU students, has received a $15,000 capacity-building grant from the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation (RMHF). This strategic investment will help KR Scholars strengthen its operations and infrastructure, directly enabling the expansion and long-term impact of its flagship program, The HBCU Bridge. The program supports Richmond high school students from under-resourced areas on their path from campus to career.

"RMHF's dedication to equity is incredibly inspiring," said Kristen Johnson, Founder, KR Scholars. "This capacity-building support is pivotal; it will empower The HBCU Bridge to expand its reach, ensuring more scholars receive the vital resources and mentorship needed to thrive."

"We're proud to champion KR Scholars' vital work through this capacity-building grant," stated Reggie Gordon, President & CEO of RMHF. "As an HBCU graduate myself—HU, YOU KNOW! I know firsthand the profound value of a culturally affirming, enriching educational experience. KR Scholars is doing powerful work to make that experience accessible to more students, and we're thrilled to support their organizational growth."

This capacity-building grant will fuel KR Scholars' growth, focusing on:
Strategic Program Scalability: Developing and refining internal systems and processes to efficiently increase the number of students served by The HBCU Bridge program.
Long-Term Program Sustainability: Building financial and operational resilience by establishing strategic reserves and implementing robust processes, ensuring The HBCU Bridge program’s continued growth and lasting impact for years to come.
These foundational improvements position KR Scholars for significant growth, empowering more students on their path to success.
