The HBCU Bridge Expands to Serve 50 Richmond Scholars

October 23, 2026

The HBCU Bridge™ just got bigger—and so did the possibilities for Richmond scholars. KR Scholars is expanding the capacity of its school-year program to serve 50 scholars at John Marshall High School and Huguenot High School, bringing more students opportunities to explore Historically Black Colleges and Universities, prepare for college, and connect their education to future careers.

For KR Scholars, this expansion is about the support students receive along the way. Through consistent engagement, practical guidance, and experiences that bring college and career possibilities into focus, The HBCU Bridge helps scholars turn their aspirations into informed next steps.

BUILDING A PIPELINE FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO HBCUs

Choosing a college involves more than deciding where to apply. Students also need to understand what they want to study, how they will pay for their education, and how their choices connect to the future they envision. The HBCU Bridge brings those conversations together, helping students consider their college plans alongside their financial and career goals.

HBCUs are central to this work. The program introduces scholars to institutions where they can pursue academic interests, build community, and explore their potential. Campus exposure helps students move from recognizing a college name to imagining themselves learning, participating, and growing there.

KR Scholars’ broader vision extends from high school to HBCUs and from HBCU campuses to thriving careers. The school-year Bridge program helps lay that foundation early, encouraging scholars to see college preparation as part of a longer journey toward professional opportunity and economic mobility.

WHAT SCHOLARS WILL EXPERIENCE

Through monthly engagement during the school year, The HBCU Bridge connects college access, scholarship support, financial education, and career exploration. Each component gives students another way to connect their goals with the decisions in front of them.

HBCU campus visits

Campus visits help scholars experience college beyond a website or brochure. Seeing an institution firsthand gives students opportunities to explore their options, ask questions, and consider the environment in which they want to learn. These experiences can help scholars identify what matters to them when choosing a college.

Scholarship support

Paying for college is an essential part of preparing for it. Scholars receive guidance on identifying scholarship opportunities and navigating the application process. The goal is to help students approach college funding with greater awareness, preparation, and confidence.

Financial education

College decisions carry financial implications that can extend well beyond graduation. The program creates space for practical conversations about college costs, money management, and financial choices. By building this knowledge early, scholars can better evaluate their options and prepare for the responsibilities ahead.

Career exploration

Students benefit from understanding how their interests can connect to majors, skills, and professional pathways. Career exploration encourages scholars to look beyond a job title and consider the preparation different opportunities require. It also helps them connect the work they do today with the possibilities they want to pursue tomorrow.

CONNECTING AMBITION WITH A PLAN

Throughout the program, three questions guide the conversation: What will I study? What career could it lead to? How can I prepare for long-term success?

These questions give scholars a framework for exploring their options. A student may discover a new major through a career conversation, reconsider a college after visiting its campus, or begin researching scholarships with a clearer sense of purpose. The aim is to help each scholar make thoughtful choices and take ownership of their next steps.

Serving 50 scholars across two school communities expands the reach of this work while preserving its focus on ongoing engagement. College preparation is a process that develops through questions, experiences, guidance, and follow-through over time.

ROOTED IN SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

John Marshall High School and Huguenot High School provide a home for The HBCU Bridge and a direct connection to the students it serves. KR Scholars is grateful for their partnership and shared commitment to helping young people prepare for life after high school.

Working within school communities allows college and career conversations to become part of students’ school-year experience. It also creates opportunities to reinforce preparation over time and bring scholars together around shared goals.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO INVEST IN WHAT COMES NEXT

For corporate partners, foundations, individual donors, and community organizations, this expansion offers a concrete opportunity to support college access and the development of future HBCU talent.

Financial contributions can help sustain the experiences and resources that make the program possible, including campus visits, learning materials, and program delivery. Professionals and employers can contribute career exposure, share expertise, and help students understand the skills and pathways connected to different fields.

HBCU alumni also bring a valuable perspective. Sharing their educational and professional experiences can help students connect the idea of attending an HBCU with real people, real journeys, and a range of possibilities.

Together, these contributions support a shared goal: helping more Richmond scholars enter their next chapter with stronger preparation, clearer direction, and greater confidence.
