The HBCU Bridge Program Is Back in Session at John Marshall High School

October 14, 2025
The journey to college is officially underway for a new group of scholars. KR Scholars has kicked off the 2025 HBCU Bridge Program at John Marshall High School in Richmond, VA, welcoming 20 motivated juniors and seniors into this year’s cohort.
The HBCU Bridge Program is an 8-month college and career readiness experience designed to guide high school students through every step of the college preparation process—from exploration to enrollment. This program is proudly delivered in partnership with Richmond Public Schools as part of our mission to increase college access and economic mobility for students from historically underserved communities.
What Students Will Gain
Throughout the program, scholars participate in interactive sessions focused on:
🎓 HBCU Exploration – Learning the history, legacy, and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
📝 College Application Support – Essays, recommendations, and application strategy
💸 Financial Literacy – Budgeting, scholarships, FAFSA, and responsible student loan planning
💼 Career Exposure – Exploring high-demand industries and professional pathways
💬 Mentorship & Leadership Development – Guidance from HBCU graduates and industry professionals
🚀 Workforce Readiness – Résume building, interview skills, and career mindset
This week’s kickoff session included a high-energy HBCU scavenger hunt and student introductions, setting the tone for a meaningful year of growth, preparation, and opportunity.
Why It Matters
Only 54% of students in Virginia enroll in college directly after high school, and the rate is even lower for students from under-resourced communities. The HBCU Bridge Program changes that by offering early college guidance, exposure, and hands-on support—before students reach their senior year crisis point.
“We meet students where they are and walk with them step by step,” said Kristen Johnson, Founder & CEO of KR Scholars. “College readiness is more than an application—it’s confidence, preparation, and access to opportunity. That’s what the HBCU Bridge provides.”
